Matthew 1:18-25
Joseph's Dilemma
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in
this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but
before they lived together, she was found to be with child from
the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and
unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss
her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel
of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said:
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to
take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from
the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him
Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken
by the Lord through the prophet:
"Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a
son, and they shall name him Immanuel," which means, "God
is with us."
When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel
of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no
marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named
him Jesus.

Good News and Bad News
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born
in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the
Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to
pay him homage."
When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and
all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests
and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah
was to be born.
They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for
so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in
the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'"
Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and
learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared.
Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go
and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him,
bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage."
When they had heard the king, they set out; and
there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its
rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When
they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with
joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother;
and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure
chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they
left for their own country by another road.

On the Road Again ...
Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared
to Joseph in a dream and said:
"Get up, take the child and his mother, and
flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is
about to search for the child, to destroy him."
Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother
by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death
of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord
through the prophet,
"Out of Egypt I have called my son."
Herod's Folly
When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the
wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children
in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according
to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled
what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:
"A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud
lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be
consoled, because they are no more."
On the Road Again, Again ...
When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly
appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,
"Get up, take the child and his mother, and
go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's
life are dead."
Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother,
and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus
was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid
to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to
the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called
Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might
be fulfilled,
"He will be called a Nazorean."

Second Sunday of Advent (A02)
Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the
wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, "Repent, for the kingdom
of heaven has come near." This is the one of whom the prophet
Isaiah spoke when he said,
"The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'"
Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather
belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him,
and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by
him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming
for baptism, he said to them,
"You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee
from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not
presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor';
for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children
to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees;
every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down
and thrown into the fire.
"I baptize you with water for repentance,
but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will
clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary;
but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

Jesus Takes the Plunge
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan,
to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying,
"I need to be baptized by you, and do you
come to me?"
But Jesus answered him,
"Let it be so now; for it is proper for us
in this way to fulfill all righteousness."
Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized,
just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened
to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and
alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said,
"This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I
am well pleased."

Jesus Bedevils the Devil
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights,
and afterwards he was famished.
The tempter came and said to him, "If you
are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."
But he answered, "It is written, 'One does
not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the
mouth of God.'"
Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed
him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you
are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He
will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they
will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against
a stone.'"
Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do
not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain
and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor;
and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will
fall down and worship me."
Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan!
for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only
him.'"
Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came
and waited on him.

Jesus Gets Started ... in Galilee
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in
Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might
be fulfilled:
"Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the
road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles --
the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for
those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."
From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent,
for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Jesus Goes Fishing
As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two
brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea--for they were fishermen.
And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will
make you fish for people."
Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of
Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee,
mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left
the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout
Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good
news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness
among the people.

letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until
all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least
of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will

let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that
anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity,
causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced
woman commits adultery."

not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

"What did you go out into the wilderness to
look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to
see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft
robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A
prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the
one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I tell
you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than
John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater
than he.

Everybody's a Critic
"But to what will I compare this generation?
It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to
one another, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating
nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon'; the Son of Man came
eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated
by her deeds."

At that time Jesus said, "I thank you, Father,
Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things
from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants;
yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have
been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son

The Parable of the Sower
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat
beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he
got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on
the beach.
And he told them many things in parables, saying:
"Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds
fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds
fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they
sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the
sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they
withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew
up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought
forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let
anyone with ears listen!"
The Cliff Notes
"Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone
hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the
evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this
is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground,
this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it
with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for
a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of
the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was
sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the
cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and
it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this
is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears
fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty,
and in another thirty."

The Parable of the Weeds
He put before them another parable: "The kingdom
of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his
field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed
weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants
came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the
slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you
not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds
come from?' He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' The slaves
said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But
he replied, 'No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the
wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the
harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect
the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather
the wheat into my barn.'"
The Parable of the Weeds for Dummies
Then he left the crowds and went into the house.
And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us
the parable of the weeds of the field."
He answered, "The one who sows the good seed
is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are
the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the
evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest
is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the
weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at
the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they
will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers,
and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there
will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will
shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there
in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds
heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went
ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and
cured their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples came to him and
said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late;
send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and
buy food for themselves."
Jesus said to them, "They need not go away;
you give them something to eat."
They replied, "We have nothing here but five
loaves and two fish."
And he said, "Bring them here to me."
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven,
and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were
filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces,
twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand
men, besides women and children.

by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the

he came walking toward them on the sea.
But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea,
they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they
cried out in fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take

Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command

He said, "Come."
So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on
the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong
wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out,
"Lord, save me!"

Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if

Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I
tell you, seventy-seven times. "For this reason the kingdom
of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts
with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him
ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not
pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and
children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the
slave fell on his knees before him, saying, 'Have patience with
me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him, the
lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But
that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves
who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat,
he said, 'Pay what you owe.' Then his fellow slave fell down and
pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.'
But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he
would pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened,
they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their
lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and
said to him, 'You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because
you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow
slave, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord handed him
over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my
heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not
forgive your brother or sister from your heart."

of forgiveness. We should be thankful that God has forgiven us,

Jesus Unhitches a Ride
When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached
Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying
to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately
you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and
bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this,
'The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately."
This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet,
saying,
"Tell the daughter of Zion,
Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed
them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks
on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks
on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread
them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed
were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the
one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest
heaven!" When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in
turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying,
"This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee."
Note: Zechariah 9.9 should read:
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Hebrew parallelism or pairs: rejoice and shout are
a pair; Zion and Jerusalem are the same; triumphant and victorious
equate to humble (an interesting pair but makes sense for a king
to ride a donkey in peacetime and a horse during war ... so humble
fits with triumphant and victorious); donkey, colt and foal are
all one in the same animal. Matthew's version "and on a colt"
changes this last parallelism by adding another animal.

"By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave

Jesus said to them, "I will also ask you one
question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you
by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come
from heaven, or was it of human origin?"
And they argued with one another, "If we say,
'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe
him?' But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we are afraid of the crowd;
for all regard John as a prophet." So they answered Jesus,
"We do not know."

Two for the Price of One
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the
Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer,
asked him a question to test him.
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the
greatest?"
He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a
second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together,
Jesus asked them this question: "What do you think of the
Messiah? Whose son is he?"
They said to him, "The son of David."
He said to them, "How is it then that David
by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your
feet"? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?"
No one was able to give him an answer, nor from
that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Watch Where You Sit
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
"The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; therefore,
do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they
do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy
burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others;
but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them.
They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their
phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the
place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues,
and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have
people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for
you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one
your father on earth, for you have one Father--the one in heaven.
Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor,

who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves
will be exalted.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled
"But about that day and hour no one knows,
neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son
of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah
entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and
swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Then two will be in the field; one will be taken
and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together;
one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore,
for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
But understand this: if the owner of the house had
known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would
have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming

Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish

flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed,
all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was

Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The
foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps
are going out.' But the wise replied, 'No! there will not be enough
for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some

"For it is as if a man, going on a journey,
summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one
he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each
according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received
the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made
five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents
made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent
went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled
accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents
came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you
handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave;
you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge
of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one
with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed

master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you
have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge

who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master,
I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow,

and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what
is yours.' But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave!
You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather
where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money
with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what
was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give
it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have,

Sixth Sunday of Lent (when Passion Sunday) (A22)
Matthew 27.11-66
Pilate Was Amazed
Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor
asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said,
"You say so." But when he was accused by the chief priests
and elders, he did not answer. Then Pilate said to him, "Do
you not hear how many accusations they make against you?"
But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that
the governor was greatly amazed.
Which Jesus?
Now at the festival the governor was accustomed
to release a prisoner for the crowd, anyone whom they wanted.
At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Jesus Barabbas.
So after they had gathered, Pilate said to them, "Whom do
you want me to release for you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is
called the Messiah?" For he realized that it was out of jealousy
that they had handed him over. While he was sitting on the judgment
seat, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with
that innocent man, for today I have suffered a great deal because
of a dream about him." Now the chief priests and the elders
persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed.
The governor again said to them, "Which of the two do you
want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."
Pilate said to them, "Then what should I do with Jesus who
is called the Messiah?" All of them said, "Let him be
crucified!" Then he asked, "Why, what evil has he done?"
But they shouted all the more, "Let him be crucified!"
Pilate Hedges His Bet
So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but
rather that a riot was beginning, he took some water and washed
his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this
man's blood; see to it yourselves." Then the people as a
whole answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"
So he released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he
handed him over to be crucified
The Soldiers Mistreat Jesus
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into
the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort
around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and
after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head.
They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked
him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" They spat on
him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking
him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on
him. Then they led him away to crucify him
Jesus is Crucified
As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene
named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross. And when
they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),
they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted
it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they
divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots; then they
sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his head they put
the charge against him, which read, "This is Jesus, the King
of the Jews." Then two bandits were crucified with him, one
on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided
him, shaking their heads and saying, "You who would destroy
the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are
the Son of God, come down from the cross." In the same way
the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were
mocking him, saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself.
He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now,
and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver
him now, if he wants to; for he said, 'I am God's Son.'"
The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the
same way.
Jesus Dies
From noon on, darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon. And about three o'clock Jesus cried
with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that
is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" When
some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "This man is
calling for Elijah." At once one of them ran and got a sponge,
filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him
to drink. But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether
Elijah will come to save him." Then Jesus cried again with
a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain
of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook,
and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many
bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After
his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy
city and appeared to many. Now when the centurion and those with
him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and
what took place, they were terrified and said, "Truly this
man was God's Son!" Many women were also there, looking on
from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had
provided for him. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the
mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Jesus is Buried
When it was evening, there came a rich man from
Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. He
went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered
it to be given to him. So Joseph took the body and wrapped it
in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his own new tomb, which
he had hewn in the rock. He then rolled a great stone to the door
of the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were
there, sitting opposite the tomb.
Tomb Gets a Guard of Soldiers
The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation,
the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and
said, "Sir, we remember what that impostor said while he
was still alive, 'After three days I will rise again.' Therefore
command the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise
his disciples may go and steal him away, and tell the people,
'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception would
be worse than the first." Pilate said to them, "You
have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can."
So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing
the stone.

Jesus Lives
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week
was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the
tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel
of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the
stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his
clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became
like dead men.
But the angel said to the women, "Do not be
afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see
the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
'He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead
of you to Galilee; there you will see him.' This is my message
for you."
So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great
joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!"
And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.
Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my
brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."
