Luke 12:49-56

Forecast ... Partly Cloudy

[...] He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Sandwiched inbetween parables about the kingdom of God, possessions, wealth, and faith is a strong warning about God's judgement. My feeling is that folks might have been falling asleep in the heat of the day and Jesus wanted to be sure they were paying attention. Jesus' overall message is about a loving God so this touch of John the Baptist might just be for effect or as a reminder that it is still important to repent (aka get with the program).
