Mark 1:21-28

Stronger Than Dirt

[...] Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God."

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!"

And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. [...]

Cartoon Cool Stuff

In Mark, Jesus begins his ministry in the synagogue and speaks as one with personal authority. This was bold because the scribes would only state their views indirectly in reference to oral tradition and Torah. People in Jesus' day had an intense belief in demons and evil spirits. To reach the person, the demons or belief in them had to be cast out. Again Jesus casts these false beliefs out with personal authority, not religious ritual or incantations. We too should be in awe of this kind of personal relationship with God, and strive for it through Jesus' teachings!
