Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"

And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets."

He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." [...]

Jesus wants to know: is his message getting through? He sees opposition mounting possibly leading to his death. Are people hopelessly lost or can they see the way to God from Jesus? Peter provides a twofold answer. Yes, the message has been received; "You are the Messiah." And no, the kind of messiah is not understood, hence the rebuke "get behind me Satan." The suffering servant isn't in the messiah handbook of the day. So little time, so much left to teach!
