Matthew 9:9-13

Matthew's Choice: Collect Taxes or Serve God?

[...] When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when he [Jesus] heard this, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

Cartoon Cool Stuff

This passage is Matthew's own account of his call to discipleship by Jesus. He only spends one sentence on it and lets us know in the next sentence that he was by no means an exception. Jesus definitely came looking for the lost. Apparently it wasn't a difficult decision, or, at least, not one that he ever questioned later.
