John the Baptist Get's Confirmation
Doesn't Anyone Read Isaiah Anymore ...
One of the author of Matthew's main themes is that Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets. So here, John, (even though he has already baptized Jesus and essentially declared him to be the Messiah) wants to know if Jesus is acting the part. Jesus replies to tell them that Isaiah would agree he is, although it may be a different messiah than John was looking for ... after all John is rotting in jail rather than celebrating with a new king of Israel. So, while John's impending fate is not very satisfying, the author lets us know what John was indeed right about him being the messiah, unfortunately for John, freeing the captives is more something Luke would have pointed out. Ouch.
